Alma College AmeriCorps Program

Company: Americorps
Location: Alma

Job Description:

Alma College AmeriCorps Program

Alma College is located in Gratiot County, a county in the center of the lower peninsula of Michigan with a largely rural population and a 20% poverty rate. Local poverty manifests itself in a wide range of community needs, including food insecurity, lack of access to post-secondary education, homelessness, and lack of programing for community members with special needs. The planned program strategy for meeting the food insecurity issues will require volunteers for the Community Caf, the Food Pantry and PAWS (Panther Always Willing to Serve - where food is sent home with students on the weekends). The strategy for meeting the educational need of enrolling in post-secondary education for Alma public school students will require volunteers to work in the Donald Pavlik Middle School After-School Program, the ASAP (Alma Scots, Alma Panthers - a program where students with learning disabilities are mentored by Alma College students), and the High School College Club. The planned program strategy for providing support for the LGBT+ community will involve Alma College students volunteering to collect donations and prepare them for distribution at the Gender Affirming Closet. College volunteers will also help organize other projects, such as Blood Drives. The strategy for helping the homeless as well as the disabled will require college volunteers in Hope House (a homeless shelter in Gratiot) and Dream Works (a project where adults with disabilities work with volunteers to sort and clean donations). Each VISTA member will have particular community organizations they will be working with as well as a group of Alma College students. These groups will include the Scots in Service Living and Learning Community, the ACE Scholars Program, First-Year Students, and the group of students planning Alternative Breaks. The VISTA members will also connect with Alma College professors to integrate these service opportunities into service-learning experiences. Further help on this page can be found by clicking here.
