Job Description:
IHA and Trinity Health St. Mary Mercy Hospital have an excellent
full-time opportunity for an experienced Internal Medicine
physician to serve as the Associate Program Director and Faculty
for the I nternal Medicine Residency Program located in Pontiac,
Michigan. The Associate Program Director (APD) role is 0.3 FTE, and
the remaining 0.7 FTE will be clinical teaching. The APD reports to
the Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program.
The APD is a member of the faculty of the Internal Medicine
Residency Program who assists the Program Director in enhancing
research, scholarly activities, and some administrative activities
of the program. The faculty for the Internal Medicine residency
program provides instruction, supervision, and evaluation of
resident physicians as required to meet the educational objectives
of the program and to assure supervised participation of resident
physicians in clinical care at a level appropriate to their
training and experience. Each member of the internal medicine
faculty will have clinical, administrative, research, and teaching
responsibilities assigned and scheduled by the Program Director of
the Internal Medicine. The Internal Medicine faculty is selected
from among the medical staff based on qualifications, commitment,
and desire to function as a teacher and clinical supervisor.
Faculty must be active clinicians with broad knowledge of,
experience with, and commitment to internal medicine as a
discipline, and to the generalist training of residents. Specific
Responsibilities for Associate Program Director: Dedicate an
average of at least 15 hours per week average over the year to
enriching and enhancing the research and scholarly activities in
the program, as delegated by the program director. Assist in the
general administration of the program, including those activities
related to the recruitment, selection, instruction, supervision,
counseling, evaluation, and advancement of residents, as well as
the maintenance of records related to program accreditation.
Develop and implement annual program improvement goals and
objectives as related to resident and faculty scholarly activity in
cooperation with the Program Director. Work with residents and
faculty to document all scholarly activities as related to
achievement of annual goals. Meet all the requirements for faculty
position Assist in enhancing a research environment in the program
including teaching, learning and research with the aim of
encouraging curiosity and critical thinking based on an
understanding of physiology, pathophysiology, differential
diagnosis, treatments, treatment alternatives, efficiency of care
and patient safety. Help the program and residents disseminated
scholarly learning across different platforms including local,
regional, national conferences and peer-reviewed publications.
Demonstrate and model accomplishments in research in patient care,
educational innovation, quality improvement and patient safety
initiatives, grants, review articles, systematic reviews,
meta-analyses, chapters in medical textbooks or case reports Helps
in Creation of evaluation tools, didactic educational activities or
electronic educational materials. Takes the lead on contribution to
professional committees, educational organizations or editorial
boards. Specific Responsibilities for Faculty Physician Internal
Medicine Residency Program: Assist in the development and
improvement of the written curriculum for internal medicine,
including the integration of the ACGME Competencies. Assure that
residents are familiar with the written goals and objectives of
educational assignments (rotations) at the beginning of the
rotation or assignment. Provide instruction and supervision of
assigned residents on the inpatient, consultation, clinic, and
office teaching services, as appropriate to meet the educational
objectives of the Internal Medicine curriculum. Be available to the
residents for advice and counseling. Evaluate and appropriately
document the educational and clinical performance of residents in
collaboration with other faculty and the Program Director in a
timely manner. Provide clinical services to patients on the
internal medicine teaching services, clinics, and other clinical
settings in accordance with the assignments and schedules set by
the Program Director. Carry out administrative duties assigned by
the Program Director, such as participation in the resident
recruitment program, organization of specific areas of the
curriculum, or development of a quality improvement program.
Participate in the evaluation and improvement of the Internal
Medicine Program in cooperation with faculty, residents, and the
Program Director. Actively participate in the Clinical Competency
Committee Participate in faculty development activities, including
continuing medical education, as appropriate to maintain and
improve teaching abilities at least 16 hours annually (4 hours of
which should be focused on research training) Maintain a learning
environment characterized by inquiry and scholarship, including
active participation in the conferences, research, and formal
teaching activities of the program. Provide support and advice for
residents who are conducting research in an area involving Internal
Medicine. Participate in a minimum of one didactic monthly.
Accomplish one poster/publication and one CME conference annually.
Cooperate with the Program Director in maintaining compliance with
policies and procedures governing resident education, such as the
limits on resident work hours and patient assignments. Advise the
Program Director and DIO on resource needs of the program, such as
equipment and educational materials. Requirements: Associate
Program Directors must have served on core faculty for at least two
years and have demonstrated exceptional administrative and
educational skills and expertise. Faculty physicians must possess
the requisite specialty expertise and competence in clinical care
and teaching abilities, as well as documented educational and
administrative abilities and experience in their field. Faculty
physicians must be certified by the American Board of Internal
Medicine, or possess qualifications judged to be acceptable by the
Internal Medicine Residency Review Committee. Faculty physicians
must be appointed in good standing to the medical staff of St. Mary
Mercy Hospital and must have an unrestricted license to practice
medicine issued by the State of Michigan. This is an outstanding
