Job Description:
JOB SUMMARY
Works under the direction of the Director of Surgical Services and
has 24-hour responsibility for the management of personnel and
patient care in the Operating Room and Sterile Processing
Department leads. -Contributes to the nursing service department
and hospital through support of philosophy, objectives, and
educational efforts. -Follows, supports, and enforces hospital, and
nursing service policies and procedures. -Acts as a liaison with
physicians, nursing, and administration. -As a customer-focused
Memorial Healthcare team member, he/she must be accessible,
flexible, knowledgeable, and responsive. Strives for superior
performance by consistently providing a product or service to
leadership and staff that is recognized as ultimately contributing
to the patient and family experience. -Recognizes and demonstrates
understanding of patient and family centered care.

Staff volunteers, internal and external customers.
PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Plans, implements and evaluates a nursing care delivery system for
surgical services area that reflects the hospital and nursing
department philosophy.
Identifies problems or potential problems in surgical service area
and facilitates solutions to resolve problems.
Applies effective principles of leadership and management in
coordinating the activities of the surgical service area.
Develops and utilizes policies/procedures as indicated.
Establishes and maintains staffing levels for the surgical service
area so that a responsible, efficient, and safe level of patient
care is provided with continuity
Provides clinical support and resource for staff.
Promotes effective communication.
Promotes good working relationships among other nursing staff
members in the operating room areas, between nursing units, other
disciplines and departments.
Develops and facilitates annual goals for perioperative
services.
Maintains perioperative area according to established regulatory
agencies (Joint Commission, AORN, ASPAN, AST, etc.) regulations,
standards and policies and procedures.
Chairs a minimum of one committee. (daVinci, Surgical Excellence,
etc.)
Collaboratively develops and implements an annual surgical service
quality improvement program.
Evaluates the clinical and management practices of nursing staff in
surgical services area and conducts annual performance
appraisals.
Develops education plan with assistance of education and associate
managers, mandatory competencies and facilitates performance.
Participates in the development and continuing education of self
and nursing personnel in departments.
Participates in planning and development of annual budget.
Provides oversight for capital purchase process.
Maintains collaborative relationship with Anesthesia.
Participates in nursing leadership committees.
Conducts monthly staff meetings.
Responsible for time keeping and attendance.
Demonstrates job related aspects of patient safety to assure a safe
environment, safe and effective use of equipment and technology,
and decreased risk of potential adverse patient occurrences.
Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care
appropriate to the age of patients served on his/her assigned
unit.
Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development
over the life span and possess the ability to assess data
reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate
information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative
to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as
described in the unit's and division's policies and procedures.
Demonstrates knowledge of and supports hospital mission, vision,
and values, standards, policies and procedures, operating
instructions, confidentiality statements, corporate compliance
plan, customer service standards, and the code of ethical
behavior.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS
EDUCATION
Graduate of accredited school of nursing.
Current licensure as a registered nurse in State of Michigan.
Baccalaureate degree in nursing is required.
AORN membership is required.
CNOR is preferred.
Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
Previous courses in management preferred.
EXPERIENCE
Five years of hospital pre and post-surgical areas nursing
experience.
Three years of nursing leadership experience within the most recent
past five years.
Leadership, creativity and management skills.
Evidence of previous clinical and technical skills in the specific
area of application, operating room nursing and recovery room.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL ABILITIES/MOTOR SKILLS
Able to travel independently throughout all Memorial Healthcare
facilities.
Small motor skills required for operating modern computer, office,
and telephone equipment as utilized by Memorial Healthcare
(MHC).
ESSENTIAL TECHNICAL ABILITIES
Proficiency using modern office, computer and telephone equipment
as used by Memorial Healthcare.
Hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills for administration of
medications, starting IVs, insertion and maintenance of various
tubes (NG, catheter, etc.), dressing changes, assessment
techniques, etc. when needed.
Computer skills to be able to learn software programs as
needed.
ESSENTIAL MENTAL ABILITIES
Ability to adapt and maintain focus in fast paced, quickly changing
or stressful situations.
Ability to read and interpret a variety of documents including, but
not limited to policies, operating instructions, white papers,
regulations, rules and laws.
Abilities required of a staff nurse.
Effectively problem-solve.
Understand budget analysis.
Develop and communicate effective proposals.

Understand, observe and have the ability to develop policies and
procedures.

ESSENTIAL SENSORY REQUIREMENTS
Able to see for the purpose of reading information received in
formats including but not limited to paper, computer, reports,
bulletins, updates and manuals.
Able to hear for work-related purposes.
Visually able to assess patient's condition.
Communicate receptively and expressively in English, both written
and verbal, with diverse populations, including physicians,
patients, families, community agencies, employees and
volunteers.
Accurately hear communication by phone or in person.
Maintain self-control.
